This production of Brief Encounter by Emma Rice’s Kneehigh was fantastic to work on due to the many different facets of the piece that lighting could explore and illuminate.

One example was playing with the contrast between creating a black and white effect reminiscent of the original 1940s film and using explosions of colour. I decided to begin and end the piece lit in a black and white look, using this filmic context to encompass the beautiful story in the middle which I lit with vibrant colour

Additionally, the motif throughout the piece is the flowing, formidable and menacingly beautiful sea. It sculpts the journeys of the characters, and I was able to convey this with pulsing, powerful beams of light.
